Ashida Portable Wii

Ashida Wii portable, a DIY Nintendo Switch... but worse

Project steps and Images

What began as a slightly rash summer project lapsed into a year-long endeavor of soldering and forum scanning... I first began the journey into Wii modification when a friend suggested it as a project to which I instantly decided to make. My first bold attempt to create an original design in the fall of 2021 didn't ammount to much, although it did teach me an importat lesson in planning projects. Over the summer of 2023, I decided to give the project another go, this time following the well-documented Ashida design (Big thanks to its creator and everyone on the BitBuilt forum!)

The simplified build process was basically as follows:

  1. Hack a Wii with custom game software

  2. Chop up the Wii motherboard

  3. Solder a bunch of tiny wires onto the motherboard

  4. Solder more tiny wires onto a bunch of custom boards (thanks to the BitBuilt team for desiging those)

  5. Take apart a gamecube controller and put its guts into the new 3D printed shell

  6. Assemble and wire all the other components (batteries, fan, screen)

  7. figure out how to jam the shell shut without breaking anything

  8. Download a bunch of questionable software

  9. Upload games onto the Wii

  10. Enjoy!
