Customizable Car Kit

A simple, easy-to-assemble kit with infinite possibilities!

Project steps and Images

One of my afterschool makerspace regulars loved the activity so much that he wanted a maker-themed birthday party! I had priviously make a car kit before, but the kids spent most of their time building the car, rather than customizing it. I decided that, for this version, it would be as easy as possible to assemble a working car. This one was only 6 main pieces, and the the batteries, motor, and battery pack. I then made a bunch of different types of wheels that can pop in place on the axles.

The wheels were the main customization option, where the kids could cut their own shapes out of cardboard to glue to hub pieces. I also modeled lego studs into the base for mess-free building.

Overall, this project taught be lots about desiging minimal and intuitive assemblies, and I can't wait to utilize an improved V2 in my afterschool class! I also got to test out my newfound skills in list making, inspired by reading Adam Savages' Every Tool's a Hammer.
